Competency Assessments

Reflect. Assess. Grow with Purpose.

At FPA, we believe that growth begins with insight. Our competency assessments are designed to help you reflect on your current knowledge, identify your strengths, and uncover opportunities for professional development—so you can advance your career with clarity and confidence.

What are Competency Assessments?

The competency assessments are self-guided tools aligned with The FPA Competency Model™. Each assessment measures your current proficiency in a specific competency area that supports excellence in financial planning. These assessments are not tests—they’re reflective exercises to guide your professional journey.

You’ll be asked to consider a series of real-world scenarios, behaviors, and knowledge areas. Based on your responses, you’ll receive a personalized proficiency level:

  • Foundational: Building awareness and beginning to apply the competency.
  • Intermediate: Developing consistency and confidence in key behaviors.
  • Advanced: Demonstrating strong, consistent skills and influencing others.

How It Works

  1. Choose a Competency: Select one of the six competencies.
  2. Take the Assessment: Answer a short series of reflective, scenario-based questions designed to evaluate your current practice.
  3. View Your Results: Receive your score and see where you fall on the proficiency spectrum. You can revisit your results anytime.
  4. Explore Your Learning Path: Based on your results, you’ll unlock a curated set of recommended learning resources tailored to your level—so you can focus your time where it matters most.

Why It Matters

Our assessments are built to support lifelong learning. Whether you're new to the profession, deepening your expertise, or mentoring others, this tool gives you a trusted starting point for your next steps.

Important Note: The assessments are a self-guided development tool and do not represent a certification, designation, or credential. Your results are for personal reflection and educational use only.
